All the good things are for free!

Conventionally, a down market is a good market for consumers.However,the recent move of a leading Free Web based email provider to move to paid model has raised the question of how IT service providers need to restructure themselves to survive.
This may trigger the concept of paid sites and paid content, or mayb not?
Will such moves salvage the wooing cos.
and will it benefit the users in the long run or are they just last ditch survival measures? Will other companies too, endorse it?
