Altering Display resolution at logon

By Allister ·
I would like to be able to change the display resolution on user Win2K PCs at login time, and restore it on logout.

The normal resolution would be 1024 x 768, but need to make it 640x480 for certain users who will be running a single program thatworks at the lower resolution.

Is this possible?

The resolution affects all users logging into that workstation. You can't have 2 different resolution settings for 2 different users. They'll have to change it manually.

Describe your server.

In WinNT Server, you can create a mandatory user profile that uses the lower resolution for that person.... anytime they login, they operate via whatever settings you choose in that mandatory profile.

In Win2000 Server, you should still have the option.

But WinNT Server may not be able to control Win2000 workstations.

Unfortunately, the display resolution is stored for the local machine (in HKLM), not on a user-by-user basis. There's no way to alter resolution for individual users...only on the workstation level. I seriously doubt that a mandatory profile will work.

That seems to be the logical conclusion to me

well, how about making a logon batch file that 'imports' the registry key(s) changing the resolution to 640x480? don't know about how you'd switch it back at logoff tho...

Me neither! But that seems to be on the right lines.
