Am I being hacked ?

By sivota ·
I have a home PC guarded by Zone Alarm pro which is suggesting that an unknown programme is trying to access a remote pc. The programme Microsoft VM Command Line has requested internet access but does not seem to be associated to any current software...when checked at Zone alarm site the programme name appears changed - something like
" MICROSOFtYYYEY4343". The programme is also not recognised at Microsoft knowledge base. Is this a Trojan? I have scanned using Norton Anti Virus but it suggests all is in order. If it a Trojan - - what should I do
Also what is tracker-tracker? this appears linked to the problem.

Its a little difficult to say whether your being hacked, it kind of depends on the direction that the alarm is being sounded from, and who all uses or has used the computer.

Tracker-Tracker appears to be a central site where information regardingHotline and Carracho.
Hotline and Carracho are both person to person file transfer systems, similiar in nature to a Napster. A means by which one person can share files with another using the internet. Currently P2P systems depend on a network ofcomputers working together to form a virtual computer if you will. In order for this to work there is a lot of communication by the software telling other computers it is there and ready to participate and do its part.

Both of these seem to be associated largely with people interested in or associated with Independent films, and animated films and games.

So the which direction means if Zone Alarm is saying xyz has tried to enter and I stopped it. Well at one time this computer might have had these programs and became listed as a participant and the rest of the network is trying to talk to it.

If however, zone alarm is saying this program or this action want to access the internet, well in that case there is a piece of software that is running that wants to make contact with the central area, probably for update info, of what ever nature it does.

I said it also depends on who uses the computer.

If no one who uses the computer knows ANYTHING about this then yes you might have been in a sense hacked, but not in the sense of a virus. Hacked by doing something on the internet that caused this software to be used/loaded.

If someone else does/did use the computer and might be interested in this stuff then they would be the ones to discuss "what is going on" with.

Not know either of these programs in detail it may be easy or difficult to stop the activity.

here is a reference link.

Oh don't get paranoid about the name Tracker - I get the feeling it is either a "inside joke" meaning it is meant to spook or be cool depending on your point of view. Or more simply that these types of networks have to track who is who and who is where in order to work.

Hope that has been of help and if you need more
please post a comment.

it is likely a trojan. go to msconfig and check your startup, uncheck EVERYTHING and reboot. see what happens then. also, be SURE to check all the options in norton for excluded file types. I have seen trojan/virii such as Acebo that will automatically exclude itself in Norton 2002

if this is windows 2000/xp, be sure after you clean this, or reinstall that you aren't logging on with administrative rights. give yourself user or power user rights.
