    Am I just Stupid??? Serial port question

    OK… Com1 is working in DOS and Windows 98 on my Dual boot 98/NT machine. In NT, the Serial Service is not automatically starting. When I try to start it from Control Panel I get an error, and when I go to a command prompt and typ NET START SERIAL,I get the same error. I went into the PORTS in Control Panel and made sure it was set up correctly, and even tried changing some things around… NADA!!! ANyone have an ide? It’s an IBM Thinkpad 600E. Like I said the serial port works fine in 98 & DOS. Microsoft’s site wasn’t much help.

      I know this sounds dumb but check the bios. make sure that it is turned on. Remember
      com1 irq 4 com2 irq3 com3 irq4 com4 irq3

      then make sure that in NT you have the ports assigned this way. check the irq status in nt diagnostics.

      Does it have an Infra-Red serial port? You might try disabling it in the BIOS.

      I’ve had the same problems with other types of laptops. You may just be out of luck. If it was designed for WIN98 then chances are not everything is going to work in NT.

      What is such error. have you ever check the event viewer to see any conflict ? Please check it and let me know the result

      Was Plug and Play turned off in the bios before NT was installed? If not NT will see the ports as being in use by system resources and not available when you try to configure your modem. Try using a different com port configuration (i.e. Com 5 IRQ10) if your modem allows that.

      maybe I am being stupid. I am running Windows NT workstation and I do not have a SERIAL service. Are you talking about workstation or server?

      I have a modem and an ADSL connected (not simultaneously).

      Mike,

      I have delt with many Thinkpads and can tell you for a fact that a Thinkpad 600 E has it’s serial port disabled by default. To enable it, either boot into Windows 98 and disable the IR port or better yet, download the NT Thinkpad utility package from IBM for your machine.
