AMK62-500 with W98

By steve.calkin ·
I had a PC with AMD K6-2 500 which failed regularly. I replaced hard drive, cpu fan to no avail. I then bought a new case (with new power supply), new motherboard (Gigabyte Ga-5AX) and cannot get W98 to install with this chip. It fails at various places. If I replace it with K6-2 350 (and reset jumpers) all is OK.
Anybody else had problems with this processor?
(I have a friend with same m/board and same chip and it is OK).

Hi,

disable the L2, and if nescessary th L1, cache in the BIOS to get Win installed.

You should then be able to re-enable them after the installation. If not, check out
amd.com and microsoft for patches for K6IIs over 350 Mhz. IOS.VXD timing errors and problems with USB are what you should look for.

CU,
Glenn

If your freind is willing, swap CPU's for a week or so.
It sounds to me like the fault is travelling with the CPU.

If his pc faults after swapping in your cpu, you have a faulty cpu.
If that is the case, get a warranty replacement.

I would try clocking the 500 at 350 just to get windows installed and see if that will allow you to get windows installed. I know windows 95 has a problem with AMD k6-2/350+ processors with a IOS failure and fails to load windows. I would underclockthe processor and see if it installs clock the processor back to 500 after install and see if the OS fails to load if it does clock it back down and go to ms to get an update.

I turned off internal (CPU) cache, system worked. I then set jumpers to 475mhz CPY, re-enable cache and system perfectly OK. If I set it back to 500mhz it still crashes, so I'll stick to 475 - I guess I can live with this (it's my girlfriend's machine anyway!)
