Ant Configuration files and Build process *NEW*

by CarlosAQ In reply to Ant Configuration files a ...

Reflexions from Move beyond mere source control to the problems source control doesn't solve

One of the Build tools that I find very useful is the Ant tool (They really work like a hard Ant for me :)), CM?s can use it to make deploys to different target systems (production, test, develop, ..). I?m using the next tip: define Generic Configuration Files (Source Controlled) where define only the Configuration Properties but no values, Configuration Template Files (Source Controlled) there are Base Files that is used to define how developers fill the Configuration Properties values, and Configuration Values Files (not Source Controlled, they are Configuration Template Files filled with each developer properties values). Then calling an Ant task that uses the Configuration Value Files and Generic Configuration Files to generate, for specific target a real Configuration Files with each Configuration Properties and their respective value, the template can put in each Configuration File the date and target for what was generate and it is use for the current deploy target, always when need to generate new target deploy run the Ant task that uses the last versions for the files that are Source controlled. Finally I suggest use another Ant task that validate that the Configuration Value Files is compliant with the Configuration Template File. I hope their is usefully for readers :).
