Anti-Virus Software stops running

By waldekev ·
Got an odd problem. I've had Sophos running for ages on my PC for ages - all of a sudden you would start it up to do a scan and the pgm would just exit, randomly. I removed Sophos and put on Norton Professional 2003 and it does the same ! No other pgms are effected. I've disabled the Virus checking in the BIOS and i've also run a Scan from the Norton CD and nothing has shown up. A bit of extra info - the PC seems to be getting slower and it wont shutdown properly - just seems to hang on the shutting down screen.

I'ld start by running a scandisk in safe mode to clean up any directory/file allocation problems. Erase temp files and temp internet files, run adware from lavasoft.com to clean up spyware, defrag the drive, and then try the antivirus packages again. What operating system are you using?

It turned out to be Bugbear ... for some reason running the NAV from DOS didnt pick it up. Eventually scan on bootup worked and picked it up. Thanks anyway.

Perhaps this will help. Be sure to run your anti-virus program when not connected to the internet. The slowness may be from needing to clear your temporary internet files. You also might try running a scan disk and defragmatize. To do that you need to close all open programs (Go to your desktop-Click Ctrl Alt Delete once all together- this will bring up all programs that are open. Take one at a time and click on END task. That closes that program. ALWAYS LEAVE EXPLORER AND SYSTRAY on. Those are never to be removed. Hope this helps--bheddens

Hi

Try and install the software when the computer is running in Safe Mode. Make sure you have lots of space on your hard drive. Run scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor and defragment your HDD as well. If this does not work go to Symantec's site and post the problem. If you need to do this make sure you tell them everything, otherwise you will receive a standard reply saying reinstall etc...

It is also a possibility that you have a variant of the klez virus, which has been very active the last few months. Klez can take control of your virus scanning software. You will need to remove it in DOS. Symantec and McAfee boh have directions for doing this withtheir software or you cn download a trial version of Nod32 for DOS from www.nod32.com.

The klez virus is a nasty little bugger and carries another virus with it. You may not be able to complete the uninstall in windows or DOS since some of the files may be missing, damaged or infected.

Norton has an automated fix. Go to symantec and download the file. Save it to the desktop then run it. If you can't uninstall Norton you may need to reinstall first. The program may still be damaged but you'll get the files back to remove it correctly. Then remove it and reinstall again.
