AntiVirus Gone?

By wayneinreno ·
.I installed XP and found that I cannot use my MC Afee software anymore. Is there any way to reinstall the antivirus software? I upgraded from"ME" TO "XP".McAfee says I have to go out and buy new software. Why should the customer have to pay to replace software, that was already on the system when it was purchased? Microsoft isn't making enough money?

VirusScan Online is XP compatible.
I agree that it sometimes seems like a conspiracy, but we don't have to buy W95. We don't have to buy Office 97.
Bill Gates may own some stock in McAfee, for all I know, but the owner of McAfee is Network Associates, not Microsoft.

No,it is not a way to install the software when it is determined incompatible
This is how they make money and I cannot say that it is Microsoft that should be held responsible but the anti-virus manufacturer should also bear the brunt of software upgrades, that should not be passed on to the consumer, yet with the Anti-Trust trial, they are providing the competition with the ability to add software to windows operating system,so yes as a consumer will pay a price for and how the manufacturer decides to make a profit where they see fit.I am sure this decision was made before Windows XP was released.
Microsoft is now in a position to show that they are not trying to monopolize the market.

Hi,

You do have an alternative...

Start again... Make your machine dual boot this time, Two partitions, with Windows98 or 95 (whatever you had before) and WindowsXP. Make sure you select Fat32 as the filesystem when installing WinXP.

Then you'll be able to boot to Win98 and run the virus scan on both the Win98 and WinXP partitions.

Not a perfect alternative, but an alternative, nonetheless. The price you pay for upgrading, unfortunately.

Cheers,
Tim.

When upgrading to XP, McAfee Viruscan versions 4.5, 5.x, 6.x need to be uninstalled either before or after the upgrade, then re-installed.
Unfortunately, the version of McAfee often bundled with Windows ME is not one of the above mentioned versions and does not have the features/interface of the retail versions. You would stand to benefit to purchase the full retail version anyway.

Go to www.grisoft.com and download and install the free version of AVG. This is a FREE anti virus product which has updates posted on a regular basis and is simple to configure and seems to give good AV Protection.
