I have a brand new Intel P3 733 Win98 workstation on which I have attempted to install Norton Antivirus 2000. (I was running Windows 98 second edition.)
Once installed, the system began hanging during boot-up. I eventually realised that it was stopping as soon as NAV started to scan the system files.
I un-installed it, reinstalled it, re-installed Windows 98se, downgraded to Windows 98 (1st edition), and eventually installed NAV v4 instead. At this point, everything seemed fine. However, as soon as I installed the latest virus definitions, it started to hang at startup again!
I run exactly the same software (same versions and virus definitions) on an older Pentium 233 with no problems at all.
I know I could go and get a different type of antivirus, or disable ‘scan at startup’, but does anyone have any other ideas?
By the way, the BIOS antivirus is disabled! – so no conflicts there then! (I’ve also tried setting the BIOS to default! – no luck there either!)
