I recommend looking at Sharepoint.

It comes free with an MS server.

It is a document repository, has document versioning, threaded discussions(like here) can track tasks, events, contacts etc and sync up with exchange and outlook. And you can integrate it into Microsoft's Project Server.

You can also look at the Lotus Notes Team Workplace (was QuickPlace) for something similar, and for an open source solution something like SourceForge, which combines a workspace environment with a code repository.

In a start up, I guess keeping costs to the baresh minimum is top priority. Create an account at it lets you do all the above for free. Once you establish yourself you can buy sourceforge for your corporate.

MS Sharepoint , Hummingbird Collaboration, Documentum eroom ( are some of the tools which i'm aware. Personally feel that Documentum is quite efficient . I'm not too sure abt the cost!

There are free kits also available in microsoft on collaboration.

Sharepoint would be the one i would recommend as well. You could go with Windows Sharepoint Services for the beginning - its free and HIGHLY customizable according to your needs. If you need more you can go for Sharepoint Portal Server, but my guess is WSS is the one for you. You can see what its like at

WRT to SharePoint, you can find hosted versions of it that allow you to push the maintenance costs out and allow you to focus on the actual collaboration.

Many of the hosted solution providers provide in-house support for customizing your installation to meet specific needs.

(Having learned SharePoint as part of a Project Server install, I can assure you that it has quirks that are sometimes better left to others to figure out...)

Try CVS or the nice GUI that comes with it. CVS is free.
