Any user on local machine

By curryk ·
We are trying to set the pointers in office 97 to go directly to a folder called my docs for all users who log on to a machine locally. If this can be done, how is it done. Please keep in mind we want all entries from any of the applications within office to go directly to a folder called my docs.

We have a similar situation here at the office. First I might ask are your users running the Office 97 locally or on the network? In our senerio we are running Word 95 not that the version matters, and each workstation that needs to use the Word program, has it locally installed. However, in the program there is a place to setup. The setting is found under Tool -> Options -> File Locations. Under this tab you can configure the default save and open locations, as well as templates that you might have created like a business letterhead, and so forth. Another option that could be used as an aid is to make the users / groups , default/home directory to be the specified spot you want everyone to work from. Additionally I believe that a policy can be used to specify the file locations on the NT Resource Kit CD there are policy templates for the office 97 suite, they are the adm files. This can be used as well. So there are a few options to think about I hope this helped, and if youneed the pol templat

Simple. If it's a ton of workstations, you'll have to use the Office .adm's in conjunction with Policy Editor. If it's a only a handful of machines follow these instructions:
1) Open Regedit on the local machine, and drill down to \HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders.
2) You'll see a value for Personal. Change this value to "C:\My Docs" and hit ok. This will force a user to open and save any office work to the specified folder.
This only works for users who log in for the first time after you make the change. To affect current users, instead of \HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\, goto \HKEY_USERS\%SID% and follow the same underlying paths. Do this to every %SID% under the hive \HKEY_USERS. When users log back on, this change will take affect and they will be using your specified directory.
