Anybody using DFS?

By Brazen1 ·
What server/service pack are you using? What do you think of it? Does it work good for you?

as I said keeps shared folder objects in AD organized and can use a MMC to manage the shared folders. Users can browse the DFS for folders instead of the computer management console which we hide from users.

we replicate over to a file server those folders that hold "important" stuff [mostly HR department junk, just as a precaution].

Also, I shoulda specified, are you using replication in the DFS. I forget you can use DFS without replication. The replication and failover capabilities is what I'm most interested in hearing peoples comments on.

Was using it heavily at my last position. (Got tired of 24/7 calls)

It worked very well. We used it to replicate between 2 data centers in 2 states.

One thing that was very nice was that you could set your drive mappings to \\domainname\share and the local machine would map to the closest box. Saved a ton of headaches with people trying to access large files over the WAN. The user community was very happy with the results.

So would anyone say it causes more headaches than it fixes.

We've used it for about 2 years. When we started we were on 2000/SP2, now on 2003. It's been very helpful to us and we use it for all of our user home directories, shared directories for applications etc. We are not using the replication functionality. We have no trouble with it.
