Anyone seen Das Untergang?

Watched a fabulous movie the other night, not new but new for me. Das Untergang, it’s the story of Hitler’s last days in Berlin. German with English subtitles, it’s one of the best (most accurate) portrayals of Hitler, his generals and his last few days as his syphillis became unmanageable and he lost his mind.

It starts with the Germans fearing the Russian attack on Berlin, it illustrates Hitler’s perparations, realization that his generals have all disobeyed orders and gone against him, how in his state of madness he thinks he has disposable armies left, when they are all but entirely wiped out by the Russians.

It then gets quite deep, going into great detail how he asked so many to leave Berlin and flee the Russian advances and how he and his new wife (rushed wedding in the bomb shelter)met with the Goebbels family and they all ended up comitting suicide.

All in all it was a refreshing look at the nonHollywood side of the war. It duly illustrates how Russia was responsible for finally toppling Germany and taking over Berlin, as opposed to the Allied fantasy tales we all see so often.

If you haven’t seen it, rent it or download it. Great movie, very long, well made and acting is top notch, especially the guy who plays Hitler. Sieg Heil!
