AOL 5.0 CausesProblemsW/ Outlook Express

By .com.hosed ·
I recently loaded aol 5.0 (for the wife) on my new dell desktop (win 98se, outlook express). After loading AOL 5.0, Outlook Express disconnects my Internet connection after a brief period of time. I uninstalled AOL, examined my dial up network settings, but am still having the outlook exp. disconnect problem...ANy ideas? Thanks in advance!

You didn't by chance choose the "let AOL be my default" option did you? If so, reinstall with a new version of IE, like 5.5 and see if that resets the problem.

I didn't install AOL as the default browser. Thanks, though!

Not an answer, but a step towards it??
Have you enabled any logging capabilities for the modem / DUN?
Modemlog.txt : enabled in Control Panel ? Modems ? Advanced Connections (saved in the NT root dir)
The Device Log will probably not help you since it stops logging after a connection is established, but here is the info.

Device.log is stored in \systemroot\SYSTEM32\RAS directory. To enable it A registry hack is needed. Set the following key to 1 : (But back up the registry 1st)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\Parameters

In the way of a possible fix, try (not really certain it will work, but worth a try) removing dial up networking from the PC and re-installing it.

Hope the above provides some more info, I will keep digging?.

In Outlook Express, take a look at Tools\Options\Connections. In the Dial-Up space, make sure that the "Hang up after ing and receiving" checkbox is not checked.

Check to see if the connections box for proxy server settings is enabled,Click on Internet Options, choose Connections Tab,then choose Settings button next to Dial-up Settings and see if the Proxy Server box is checked and uncheck it.
Another thing that may be happening is that Aol does not support the Dial-Up settings, that is required for Outlook Express
as far as the proxy server settings go.

AOL installs its own adapter and TCP/IP protocol stack during the installation process. After rebooting all previously
installed TCP/IP adapters are removed.

Please try,
Remove the Dail-Up Networking
(Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup, Communications, Details, uncheck the Dail-Up Networking)
Reboot the system
Reinstall the Dial-Up Networkin
