I have been struggling for months to get internet sharing operational between a 98-SE and an ME. File and printer sharing works fine using IPX/SPX protocol over Linksys Etherfast hardware. Internet sharing actually worked using WinGate demo software, but the purchased copy failed. Sygate failed. WINS worked for a few hours, then crashed the registry of the gateway (over and over, reliably). I have tried every permutation of network settings, DUNS and static IP addresses, followed instructions explicitly, etc.
I feel that larger forces may be at work here. Is it possible that AOL (and CompuServe) may have some intentional blockage to sharing? I can’t blame them for crashing the registry – kudos to Bill Gates for that. Their setupscreens specifically name home networking and attach to TCP/IP adapters. So far, I haven’t found anyone there who understands my problem.
