Apparent second harddisk / IDE issue

Locked

by abanerji ·

My PC configuration : Pentium dual core, Intel E2160 1.6 GHz on Intel D945GCNL, DDR2 1 GB, Seagate SATA 7200 RPM 160 GB, Sony CD-DVD combo, XP-pro SP2 fully patched, AVG free 7.5, AVG AS 7.5. Additionally, I put a second hard disk from an old Compaq PC – this is a Seagate Barracuda 40 GB 7200 RPM ultra-ATA/100 bought nearly three years ago.
System is just two months old, and was going smooth.

Yesterday, shutdown took a long time, and today boot was very long. The harddisk indicator is continually on. I am pasting below the relevant rows from event viewer.

Shall be grateful for advice. Thanks,

Power down and disconnect the 2nd drive …

Remove BOTH the IDE and power cables from the old drive then boot again.

Clearly the IDE drive is faulty.

I’d simply toss it away!

If there’s anything on it that you need or want, you can’t risk putting it back in where it can interfere with the system boot.

Get a caddy and attach it by USB after the system has successfully booted. Transfer what you can, if any of it is still readable, then throw it straight in the bin.

With the ludicrously cheap prices for hard drives these days, no-one should be taking risks with an old 40GB drive. 🙂

Just one query. Why did my Sony DVD RW also disappear from the system, along with my second hard disk? I am not a techie, so sorry if this sounds silly … something to do with IDE?

Did it have problems before you posted or only as a result of disconnecting the dodgy hard drive?

If it is an IDE optical drive I would advise reconnecting it. Perhaps you disconnected it when you removed the IDE hard drive?

DVD RW earlier mentioned under my PC config ..

Anyway, I haven’t yet opened the cabinet. So, connections have not been touched yet.

Everything mentioned (in my original post) are with respect to hardware as in the cabinet from Day One.

I will have to get a technician to poke inside the cabinet.
