Sounds like a very perplexing problem but I see no definitive answer yet.

QUESTION: In MS WORD, can you select FORMAT>FONT and choose Bold type without it crashing?
If YES, see answer A
If NO, see answer B

A)The problem seems to be related to the button's code being corrupted.
You can run a Word daignostic startup that will check for a corrupted value in the DATA key.

Click START>RUN and type 'winword.exe /a' [without the quotes] (You may need to specify the full path although you probably won't.)

If the DATA key holds the corrupted toolbar code, and it is corrupted bad enough, it will trigger office repair and reset the default options.

Answer B
Because it is common to both Wordpad AND MSWord, this tells me that it is not a problem with the application itself. Both programs are probably fine. There MAY however be a corrupted toolbar file but I'd look to the obvious first.

The problem seems to be within the system executing the BOLD TYPE function call itself, so I would recommend running System File Checker (if available, you didn't mention what operating system you are using) by typing 'SFC.EXE' (without the quotations into the command prompt (START>RUN).

This will replace any altered or damaged system files, either from the partition on your hard drive or the systems install CD.

If you still have problems and can offer more details, such as the operating system, please post back your comments.

Best of luck,
OM

Have you tried deleting/renaming Normal.dot
Delete temp Word files. They start with a tilde (~).
You are usually safe deleting:
~?*.*
Wordpad is Word 6.0

I think you may want to folllow DKlippert's suggestion of deleting Normal.dot I thought that running wordpad.exe/a would replace that if corrupted but it may not have.

I don't know if the file is common to wordpad as welll as MSWord but you never know I guess?!

Have you tried just running WIN2000 setup again?
Perhaps reinstalling your Office SP's will help.

Sounds like a macro in your default template. Search for the file Normal.Dot and delete all that you find. The software will create a generic one when it starts up and doesn't find it. You may also want to locate all the temp files at the same location or look for them under Documents and Settings. Delete all you find. It should then work correctly.
