if I run regedit, msconfig, they stay open for a short amount of time. If I'm typing or not, it will close on me.

You probably have a virus or spyware running, they will both sometimes cause this problem. First download and run CWShredder to remove variatns of Cool Web Search, then do a virus scan - you can do one online at Symantec.com, to find out which, if any virus you are dealing with. Finally, download and run SpyBot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware by Lavasoft, making sure to get updates prior to scanning with these programs. One or more of these will find problems and fix them which should allow you to run the programs normally again. If you can't get them to install in real mode, all but Norton AntiVirus will install in safe mode.
Good luck,

Vickie

I ran adaware 6,spysweeper, and Norton (after a live update)and it still occurred. I then backed up the files, reinstalled the OS with a format and voila, problem solved.

ladytech has it pretty well locked. Speaking from experience, a client the W32/Nachi.A.Worm and it exihibited identical characteristics. You couldn't keep msconfig or regedit open long enough to do anything. The Norton Antivirus had expired several months earlier and the virus disabled Norton from updating or even scanning. I downloaded Stinger at:

I am not saying you have this exact virus, but your computers actions are indicative of a Virus.
Good Luck,
Peter
