Arcserve can't backup these files!

By tclere ·
I have a problem that I hope you can help me out with. My file server backup software (Arcserve) will not backup the following eight ( files:

Name Size Type Modified
CiCL0001.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiPS0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiPT0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiSL0001.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiSP0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiST0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiVP0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
Index.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM

You will note that they were all last modified on the same date at the same time over a year ago, almost as though these are all initial setup files. In addition, each of these files has two ?sister? files that I think might be associated with each of them. All three of each file is listed below for comparison:

Name Size Type Modified
CiCL0001.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiCL0001.001 64 KB 001 File 10/01/1999 4:41 PM
CiCL0001.002 64 KB 002 File 10/01/1999 4:41 PM
CiPS0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiPS0000.001 64 KB 001 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiPS0000.002 64 KB 002 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiPT0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiPT0000.001 64 KB 001 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiPT0000.002 64 KB 002 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiSL0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiSL0000.001 64 KB 001 File 10/04/1999 1:38 PM
CiSL0000.002 64 KB 002 File 10/04/1999 1:38 PM
CiSP0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiSP0000.001 64 KB 001 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiSP0000.002 64 KB 002 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiST0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiST0000.001 128 KB 001 File 10/01/1999 4:31 PM
CiST0000.002 128 KB 002 File 10/01/1999 4:31 PM

Arcserve can't backup these files!

by tclere In reply to Arcserve can't backup the ...

Here is the remainder of the problem:

CiVP0000.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiVP0000.001 64 KB 001 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
CiVP0000.002 64 KB 002 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
Index.000 1KB 000 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
Index.00164 KB 001 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM
Index.002 64 KB 002 File 10/01/1999 4:30 PM

There are quite a number of similarities in these files. Except for the CiCL0001.xxx files, which were last modified at 4:41and the CiSL0000.xxx files, which werelast modified on 10/04/1999 at 1:38PM, all of these were last modified at the exact same time. Hmmmm?

I can?t even look at these files (access denied) with Notepad but I can look at the sister files even though most of contents are unreadable. From the contents of the sister files I believe that these 8 files are related to my MS Exchange installation. However, all of the Exchange Services are stopped prior to Arcserve launching the backup process (part of the pre/post command within Arcserve). Why won?t these files backup if Exchange is down? What is the purpose of these eight files? What is the controlling application? How can I determine the controlling application? Can I delete these eight files without negatively impacting a program? In fact, given that I can?t read them (access denied), how could I delete them?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

These files look like misc files. I would copy the files to a safe location then delete them. See how the system is impacted (I have a feeling it won't be affected at all). If the system is affected replace them. Once you determine they are not needed you can delete them or just filter them from being backed up.

The fact that they have extensions of .001, 002 indicates to me that they are not important files. Another good indication is the file size.

You could rename them with a different extension and see how the system respondes and rename the back if needed.

I believe these files are part of Microsoft Index Server. There's a chart at the bottom of this link that explains what each file is:

http://vwsnt.magma.ca/indexserver/help/cathlp.htm

Don't know anything about Index Server, but if you stop itbefore running Arcserve, they should get backed up. Or, if you're not even running Arcserve, delete them.

(The Questions page shows there's 1 answer to this question, but I don't see it. If I duplicated anybody's reply, sorry!)

I meant to say, if you're not running INDEX SERVER, delete them.

A couple fo things, firstly, the files look like Index Server files.. are you running Index server?. In any event I believe they are related to some form of database management system. I have had similar probs with some files like this, and because of their minimal size I have just unchecked them in the backup tree and left the files alone.

Secondly, depending on the version of ARCServe ie with ARCServeIT 6.61 there is a exchange agent that allows you to backup the exchange server without stopping any services. Computer associates web site has lots of information about this. I believe the earlier version of ARCserve also had the exchange agent. This is pretty good giving you brick level backup of the mailboxes, although I haven't determined how to restore individual mail messages yet.

Good luck.

Arcserve can't backup these files!

by C. Hilbrandt In reply to Arcserve can't backup the ...

I agree that these files do not look important (looks can be deceiving so make sure you have a good backup, but since Arcserve can't back them up, that may be hard to do). The first question to ask is this issue more of an annoyance or a full fledged problem. If it was only annoying, then I would proceed more slowly. Before I actually whacked these files, I would want a good backup. Can you use NT's backup to get a good backup (or another 3rd party)? Once you have a backup, the next question is can you actually delete the files? If not, is your system partition FAT or NTFS. If FAT, use a DOS boot disk and delete them. If NTFS, use a 3rd party utility like Winternals ERD commander 2000 which allows to to boot by diskettes to a command prompt and delete then via command line. I'd do all this if this is a production server that can't have down time. Good Luck
