Are payment gateways working differently from market to market?

By dino_hsu_1019 ·
I am working on the rollouts of several Asian markets of a global Internet application, and our team has trouble understanding the application to payment gateways interactions. According to the core application business requirement, either "payment with application website" or "payment with external bank's website" should be chosed and the technical aspects are market-specific.
The information I have is: China has to link to each bank, and South Korea and Taiwan embed a small program to communicate a gateway; there are still differences between South Korea and Taiwan like South Korea has more than one gateway vendors, Taiwan has only one: NCCC (national credit card center), South Korea uses an DLL program, Taiwan uses JavaScript codes.
Do you know about any general guideline about the technical aspects of online payment to cover all markets in the world and make clear distinctions among approaches so that all members in the team can share the same understandings? Thanks in advance.
