    AREN’T YOU SICK AND TIRED???

    Locked

    by jasonbis ·

Aren’t you sick and tired of all those people posting questions and never assigning any points? It happens almost every time I answer a question. The person leaves it open forever or closes it and never assigns any points.

You can respond with your thoughts if you’d like but of course I’m not really going to award someone 5000 points. That was just to get you to look at this.

We need Techrepublic to come up with another system such as: If someone leaves a post open for more than a month than it automatically closes and awards the points evenly to all responders.

    Any other suggestions??

So you’re sick and tired of people not assigning points; however, you’re not going to award any points? That’ll show ’em!

“You can respond with your thoughts if you’d like but of course I’m not really going to award someone 5000 points.”

Way to take the lead and set an example. I like the idea of getting points to ask questions in the future, but I find that I somethimes learn more about problems and their solutions if I research a question that someone else has. I know how you feel, because I would like the points, b ut I have found that the benefits of solving someone else’s problems outweighs the loss of points.

Auto-closing and auto-assigning points is not a good idea – every Tom, Dick, and Harry will post some junk just to grab a share of points. The best solution is for a moderator to read posts over a certain date and use their judgement to assign the points fairly.

You certainly hit the nail on the head.

Most irritating are the people who ask the question, get the answer, reject it and close the question without any comments whatsoever.

It could be just inexperience, not necessarily a sign of exploitative behaviour, because most often these people have just joined TR. However, usually the option to ‘Send private message’ to them is blocked. I got once so annoyed that I answered the next question by him/her with what I thought about the previous closure without points or comments.

How about not awarding the points as yet but debiting at least some points from the account that has not closed the question? That would serve them right.

This has been an ongoing issue for the 4 years that I have been actively posting answers to questions.

There have been numerous threads in the Discussion Center, and questions like yours trying to come up with methods to handle the issue.

Some thoughts that have come out of the past discussions:

The points have no value (at this time anyhow) they are simply a means of keeping score.

Accept the fact that some people will not take the time to follow through and close the questions they have asked.
How many other forums require the person who started a thread to close it?

Remember that the forums here at TR are peer moderated. Use your keyboard to politely scold peers who mis-use the forum.

In real life, how many people accept your advice and reward you for it?

Take comfort in those peers that follow through and thank you for your efforts.
Forget about, or ignore those who don’t.

Most of all, take your personal satisfaction from posting good answers.

This is funny that you posted this question/concern. I am very new to TechRepublic and sent a Help question in asking how TechRepublic handled unassigned Q&A’s. I am awaiting the response.

In the meantime, I think it should be a very simple thing for 4,000,000 smart people or at least 100 tagged smart people to come up with a viable solution. We solve harder problems than this every day, don’t we? Saying, you should just treasure the joy you get from knowing you did a good job is….., well, it’s not my style. If the points don’t mean anything, get rid of them. They do mean something, however; they are an arbritrary measure of your effort.

It seems like you could just automatically close unawarded questions after some fixed amount of time; take away 5 x the points from the questioner or some other large penalty; have the TechRepublic guys choice a winner or just split up the points or let the posters vote on the best answer or just award nothing. The point is that there IS some solution. Maybe you could ban the question asker from ever asking questions until they close thier answered questions.

I agree with what TheChas has said. To quote “In real life, how many people accept your advice and reward you for it?

The one thing about the IT world is that there are no truly right answers [well almost]as there are many different ways to solve the problem.

I think they ought to just get rid of the scorecard all together.

I am not here for your points but to respond for your question.

You are right on one thing to CLOSE a qustion after sometime automatically. Duration may be couple of months not only ONE month. Because I have seen couple of queries got answer after couple of months and the perfact one. So it could be 4-6 months time limit as per me.

And Yes ppl should go through the FAQs first instead of posting questions. Points dosen’t matter. FAQs on any site are the DATA bank or say knowledge bank.

And I am damm sure that you are also not going to give points to anyone of us also. It dosen’t matter also.

About rejection of answer: Yes one can reject your answer if he/she do not find suitable to the question’s solution. BUT on rejection they should put a COMMENT for the rejection.

      Dude have nice day….

Qualify a member BEFORE answering their questions.

I look at a TQ&A, and then I look at the members profile.

If they have a history of not closing questions, all they get is harrassed by me about being a leach and a worm. I have been known to also start a “Worm of the Week” discussion to point out to others what a poor member this person is and to steer people away from answering future quetions so they will just go away.

If they are new, or have a good history, then we are off to the races to get the right answer before anyone else can!

Points? bah! Just close AND rate my answer AND tell people what solved the problem!
