Article on stolen laptop info

By gralfus ·
Yahoo news has an article about the "juicy" info available on auctioned laptops. It is a long URL, so you may have to just go to the main site and fine it that way. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=1&u=/nm/20040609/tc_nm/tech_laptop_dc

But it raises an important flag: do you have a way to keep your data safe on your equipment? Since physical access + password bypass/reset/cracking software = full access to sensitive data, how many of you actually use encryption to protect your stored data? (In case the whole computer gets stolen...) All it takes is your Social Security number and/or a credit card number to create a lot of havoc in your personal life.

I don't typically encrypt, except for certian password archives. Even then, in case I meet an untimely demise, my partner needs to have access so I have a non-encrypted version in an alegedly safe location. Is there a beter way?
