ASP And XML

By dwtk9 ·
Hi all,

I currently have a VB program that has created an XML document with type DOMDocument. I plan to pass this document back to the asp.
My Questions
A) Do I pass the file back as XMLDocument or Object or XMLHTTPRequest?

B) How then can ASP refer to the returned object?

Anyone got any ideas. Thanks

ASP And XML

Four options...
Option 1.
Recreate your VB app as a VB COM component (no UI, Both-Threaded, dll), register the component on the ASP server and then instantiate your app with a Server.CreateObject("myxmldoc.document") That way you have access toyour VB app as if it were part of ASP. You wouldn't have to return anything because it existis inside the scope of the application

Option 2
Create a COM component that acts as a proxy between ASP and your app, similar setup as option 1 except here you would return an object of type "myproxy.document" or "myproxy.DOMDocument" from your VB app to your ASP app through the proxy COM component. The proxy would have to be responsible for ensuring that your application is running and you would need to develop a way for your proxy and your app to talk... (ala ODBC and SQL Server)

Option 3
Set your app to recognize command-line input on startup and provide return codes on exit. Ensure your app can gracefully run unattended through to exiting. Then use the command line input to steer your app to do what you want, save the file at an agreed upon location (command line request), In your ASP page use vbscript/jscript to "Shell" your app, wait for the return code then depending on the exit code, read the newly created xml doc in or fail...

Option 4
Create an ISAPI filter and use the HTTP I/O stream to control when and where to insert text into the stream by using substitution tags (<-- $insertxmldochere$ --&gt in your ASP app.
