Asset Tracking

By benjamin ·
I am looking for low budget or free asset tracking/barcoding software to keep track of nearly 200 computers/printers. Is there such a software that would create a barcode label with some indentifiable number on it that when called up with a barcode scanner will open up possibly an Access database with all inventory information in an editable format? As inventory information, I would like: computer name, IP, Network printers, users, serial number, MAC address, peripherals, make, model, and a notes section with auto stamping the time and date of any note added(to keep track of incidents). Is this out there or can it simply be created? Please help to point me in the right direction.
Thank you.

Why don't you try using PHP and MySQL to create a simple web-based Inventory Management System. There's a techrepublic article which actually teach u how to generate barcode using PHP (you just need to do a search around TR).

Random barcode generation with update, insert and delete record with MySQL and PHP will do the trick for your needs. And it's simply free to run PHP and MySQL.

For scanning barcode, just playing around with javascript focus and some PHP form will do the job and retrieve the code that you have scanned from the database.

You can use free zCI It can detect a lof of things automatically, such as computer serial number, monitor serial number, MAC address, installed software & etc.
