Asus DVD Drive problems

By daniel.searle ·
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 32-bit
DVD Drive: ASUS DRW-1608P3S

The dvd drive in my computer isn't working correctly. I put a disc (cd, or dvd) in, and it will not autoplay or show up in My Computer that a disc has been put in.
The icon for the dvd drive doesn't change as it usually does when you insert a disc.
If you right click the dvd drive, there are no options to open\explore\autoplay\open with...etc.
Double clicking the dvd drive will open the disc and display the contents of the disc but this is useless when opening a dvd movie as all you are shown is a list of the .vob .bup .ifo files. I can play the .vob files through vlc media player, but each time one file finishes playing I have to select the next one so I can't just sit back and watch the entire movie.

I un-installed the drivers, restarted my computer, downloaded and installed the latest drivers, restarted my computer, but the problem is still there.

I have no disc emulation software running.

Am at a bit of a dead end as to what to do next.
Any help will be appreciated.

I managed to solve this problem.

The problem was the following registry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\CDRom\Autorun needed to be set to 1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun needed to be changed from 0xb5 to Hexadecimal 91.
