ATA Maxtor hard drive

By pchlp ·
I have a computer with a Maxtor ATA hard drive and I wand to do a repair on it. It has XP HOme but when I boot up with the XP CD rom it says that there is no hard drive there. How do I reinstall XP and how would I do repair on the file system. It boots up and says, device driver failed. IT sees the drive in the BIOS.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Do you mean a PATA or SATA HDD?

If it's a SATA drive you'll need to install the drivers for it they should have come on a floppy and you need to press the F6 key when the first Windows Setup Screen comes up.

If it's a PATA drive it's got a fault with either the HDD, the IDE/power lead or the Controller on the M'Board.

Download the Drive Testing Utility from Maxtor and test the drive for faults. If it fails the test you should then fir it to another known good computer and test again if it's still comes up as faulty you'll need to replace the drive. If it checks out as OK then try it with the original Data Lead and test again if that doesn't bring up a fault condition you have a bad M'Board.

Take a win98 boot floppy and with the Maxtor as the only hard drive in the system boot to the floppy.

At the a: prompt. Type the following and press enter.

fdisk /mbr

If the drive comes back then.

Now follow the instructions in this Knowledgebase article.

If you are lucky.

If not then it is time for the Maxtor PowerMax.

Good Luck
