ATI display adapter conflict

By tjaco ·
I recently upgraded compaq armada 1750 from win 95 to 98. I have been getting an error message saying there is a display adapter conflict. Any suggestions based on the following info:

ATI display adapter conflict

You can try this out. Boot into Safe Mode and open the Device Manager. Move down to the display adaptor and see if there are more than one adaptor listed, if so, remove the duplicate/orphaned adaptors. Reboot the laptop to see if this resolves the issue. Should you still have display issues, open the Device Manger while booted to Normal(?) Mode. There should be an error indication for the display adaptor. Double click the adaptor icon and check the resources used by it to see what other device(s) it is conflicting with. See if you can change the resources for the offending device(s). Install the drivers, if that is what is needded. Should you not be able to change the conflicting resources for any of the offending devices or install the drivers, back up your data and install Win98 "clean" on a formatted hard drive. If you are using an upgrade version of Win98 you will be asked for a compliant upgrade version of Windows. Simply put your Win95 disk into the CD Rom drive or floppy drive, whichever is applicable and point to that drive for the setup to search for a compliant OS. Win98 will continue installation from there. Should you need the device drivers, for any devices Windows could not locate, you can go to Compaq's website anddownload the OS specific drivers for the Armada 1750 and install them. Be sure to get the motherboard drivers ( chipset ) and the most recent BIOS flash upgrade as well. DO NOT flash the BIOS unless you are absolutely certain that you know how to doso. Also ensure that the laptop is connected to a good UPS and, preferably, that your laptop battery is fully charged and working. Follow Compaq's instruction completely for flashing the BIOS. Reinstallation is a last resort approach, but should prove to be the cleanest approach. Any Win95 issues will just be carried over to Win98 with an upgrade.

I hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestions. When I try to change the resources I get a message saying it is not allowed. I think I would prefer at this point to just start over but am a little unclear on the process for doing a "clean" installation.

Do I just reformat the hard drive and then insert the Win 98 upgrade CD? If the win 98 cd is in the cd drive can I put in the win 95 cd when I am prompted for the compliant updgrade version and then replace the win 98 upgrade CD?

Thanks for any additional help you can provide.

My prefered method to install Win98 is to boot on the Win98 CD and selecting option 2, start with cd rom support, and then changing to the cd rom drive and moving to the Win98 directory.
1. Format c: <ENTER> - formats the C drive
2. md c:\win98 <ENTER> makes a win98 directory on the c drive
3. copy *.* c:\win98 <ENTER> copy all files from the current directory, d:\win98, to c:\win98. This puts the cabs on the c drive for any time you need the win98 cab files for further driver installation or system changes
4. C: <ENTER> changes to the c drive
5. cd win98 <ENTER> changes to the win98 directory on the c drive
6. setup <ENTER> starts win98 installation
7. Follow installation directions. When asked for a compliant OS to upgrade from, remove the win98 disk and insert the win95 disk. After checking for compliance, the installation will want the win98 back in the cd rom drive
8. Follow the remainder of installation directions and choose the installation type you want. I always choose "Custom" and install the components I want installed and remove the rest from the installation.
9. When the installation is complete, install any needed drivers, including the motherboard drivers
10. Install windows updates
11. Install software12 Bring in backed up data files.
13. Enjoy

I know that the steps are over explained, but this is for benefit of all the new users and not directed to you personaly.

Just a question. You rejected my answer and now you are going to use one of my suggestions to resolve the issue? At any rate, this should definitely resolve your issue.

Good computing!

The install process worked flawlessly and I was able to reinstall the proper display driver and everything works. Thanks very much for the helpful and detailed instructions.

Sorry about the unacceptable rating previously. I thought that I had to submit a rating in order to respond and since I was still having problems I picked unacceptable in order to be able to ask my follow up question. I realize now that it is possible to respond without submitting a rating. Anyway thanks again for your time and helpful advice.
