By default, Windows Media Player in Windows XP sets the CD audio properties for digital playback. In Device Manager, the setting for the CD-ROM may indicate that digital playback is not enabled, and this may occur even though you previously enabled digital playback in Windows Media Player.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
To enable or disable digital playback in Windows Media Player, click Options on the Tools menu, click the Devices tab, click your CD-ROM drive, click Properties, click the selections you want to use for playback, click OK, and then click OK.

The settings you choose in Windows Media Player override the settings you see in Device Manager.
