Audio Driver Problem

By rkuhn ·
I am an extreme newbie to Linux. Need help bad.

Please be very specific...I know nothing about Linux other than installing it just yesterday in a dual boot config w/ Win XP.

Audio card not working. It's a AC97 sound card and Red Hat 9.2? is not recognizing it.

System is P4 2.6Mhz with 768MB RAM. 120GB hard drive...blah, blah blah.

Sound card is integrated on the motherboard. Everything else was detected automatically and so far, while not a Linux fan, I am impressed and just want to get the sound working so I can not just learn Linux and also enjoy it.

Drop Red Hat 9 and pickup something that is supported. You can get the AC97 card working, but it can be a PITA.

Try Fedora Core 3. It is Red Hat 10 ;-)

Would love to install a newer version of Linux, however, I got that copy for free.

What distros should I look to (that are free) that are as easy to install as Red Hat? It walked me through everything without having to know any commands or anything.

I tried compiling Gentoo from scratch and that just made my head hurt.

Come on people (Linux lovers). I'm looking for a reason to learn Linux but thus far and getting quite discouraged.

Uh...ok. Get Fedora Core 3 then. It is designed by Red Hat and is bleeding edge. Check it out.

If you can install Red Hat 9, then you can install FC3.

FC3 is free you just need to dl the ISOs from fedora.redhat.com

You can also order Ubuntu (for free) from www.ubuntu.com. It is very easy to install.

I don't know what problems you could have had with Gentoo as the installer is very similar to that of RH and FC.

I forgot to mention that ALL the distros I mentioned are free.

FC3, Ubuntu (they even send you a free CD in the mail!), Gentoo, and Gnoppix.

Linspire and RHE you have to pay for...
