Australia to implement mandatory internet censorship?

It appears as though Australia is on the verge of censoring the entire Internet, much as China does.

This is being done in the name of restricting the trade in child pornography. An original proposal would have allowed subscribers to opt out of the program. However, the government has declared it will not let any users opt out of the proposed national internet filter.

Nobody is really surprised that totalitarian countries such as China would restrict Internet access. However, such an extreme proposal from a supposedly free country is not a good trend. Will this actually happen, and how long will it be before it spreads to other ?free? nations?
