By kenderkn ·
I am a consultant who sees many different configurations on a daily basis. I would like to have a utility that does the folowing in windows 2000 server:

-automatically documents server settings
ip addx
subnet
services running
users
groups
exchange settings
permissions (like dumpacl)
hardware details,
licensing
software installed

does anyone knwo of any program that wiull do all that?

alternatly I would like it to document client stations either via a scriptable client orsome other means but this is not necessarry.

any ideas would be helpful!!

auto document a server/network

One program to do all? Well, that would be a blessing. Unfortunately, if it does exist, it must be REALLY expensive! But here are some tools I have that are good.
First, get NetworkView:
http://www.networkview.com/
It is an IP-based network mapper. It can detect IP address, machine name, SNMP info, domain controller status (if the box is a DC or not), plus it charts it all out. A nice tool. It also works really well with routers, switches, firewalls, due to the SNMP reading. I once scanned afirewall with about 8 IPs on it, and it picked up EVERY ONE! It was great!
Now, for Windows stuff, use Dameware NT Utilities:
www.dameware.com
It is the best combined Windows utility package I have ever seen! It has everything you could want: itsown User Manager, Server Manager, Software inventory, Export function, view Shares, Open Files, running Processes, etc. Try it.
Last for the ACL info, there really isn't any substitue to just running XCACLS, IMHO.

hope this helps

You could also invest in Microsoft SMS. It not only will get you most information, but as the name of the program suggests, it is a Systems Management Server. It allows remote access to all systems running the client. Allows for pushes of full software installs and updates through packaging, which many of the enterprise software from Microsoft have a preconfigured package for install pushes. It also allows for full reporting and custom report creation so that you can pull a report on aboutanything on your network.

I don't know of a solution that will automatically do all that...but I will share a few essential items from my toolbox.

I always take:

LanGuard ( www.gfisoftware.com/lannetscan/index.htm )

Networkview ( www.networkview.com )

SiSoft Sandra ( www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra )

Ethereal ( www.ethereal.com )

All are free or very inexpensive and help dramatically in analyzing and documenting a LAN and its systems.

Good luck!
