Auto Logon to Win2k or XP

By PeterC@TNC ·
I have a need to make a workstation automatically logon to a Win2K network and bring up the workstation desktop when it boots.

This is because I have a reporting application that cannot run as a service and hence needs to be started from the users account start-up folder.

There will be occasions when the unit will need to be rebooted but will have no user to log it on at the remote site or anyone to use a remote control product to do the same job.

I understand the security issues of course and have put physical security in the way plus a keyboard emulator and no screen.

I have the option of either OS Win2K or XP but prefer 2K for this unit.

Can any provide an appropriate 'free' way of achieving this? Either Utility or regedit?

No problem. Take a look at Microsoft Knowledge Base article 234562. "How to Enable Automatic Logon in Windows 2000". It explains configuration for both domains and workgroups. You will have to edit the Registry if logging on to a domain.

You can also download an old utility from Microsoft TWEAKUI. It has various options to change system settings, AutoLogon is one of those that you can switch on. You just need to provide a relevant Username and Password.

Good Luck

If you feel uncomfortable going into the registry, you may want to try downloading this executable:

It's short, sweet and easy to use. Hope this helps.
