AutoCad 14: files don't open from CD

By charlesd ·
Our plant manager recieved a CD with CAD diagrams of some equipment he is planning to purchase. When trying to open the files on the CD from Explorer, the massage "Error loading dialog control file" is returned. When trying to open the files on the CD from within AutoCad 14, the message "This is not a legal file name for AutoCAD. Please choose another file." is returned. If the files are copied from the CD to the hard drive, there is no problem opening them. When I copied the files from the hard drive onto another CD, the same problems occurred trying to open them from the CD. Can anyone provide a reason for this behavior?

AutoCad 14: files don't open from CD

R14 will support long file names, but it depends on how your operating system handles long filenames.
Maybe your cd isn't setup to use long filenames -- depending on what OS made the cd. Just a possibility.

I've had problems with files on the hard drive before moving them to a network drive.
I got this for you off from a FAQ and maybe it'll help explain it better than I can.

A: R14 no longer needs a system variable to support long file names. It is handled by your operating system. With Windows 95 or NT 4.0, every program has properties that describe how it is to run. Within the "Shortcut" area, there is a "Start in:" field, which describes the location of AutoCAD drawing and temporary files. If this is describing a directory or volume that does not support long file names, then AutoCAD won't support long file names. If you run AutoCAD by double clicking on an icon on your desktop, you can fix this by right clicking on the icon and selecting "Properties" from the menu. Select the "Shortcut" tab and edit the field next to the "Start in:" label to describe a location the supports long file names. If you are running AutoCAD from the Start button, you can locate the shortcut file using Windows Explorer and right click to edit the properties in the same way.

Good luck!!!
Melissa

All of the file names are under seven characters and use only letter characters. Also, all of the disk areas, and the CD, support long file names. Thanks.

We had the same problem and I believe the reason for it AutoCad can't make the jump from the CD. It's looking for the drawing from one place and having a hard time with the program in another place. I thought it might be a glitch. I know when we went to AutoCAD 2000 the problem went away. Probably not the answer you were looking for.

I hope you can find an answer to your question and have better luck than I did.

Good Luck

Could it be simply that the files on the cd are read only and in order to open the file, AutoCAD must write to it. Copy 2 files to your hard drive from the cd, change the properties of one to "read only" and see if either can be opened.

Acad R14 uses the ISO standards for CD file/directory names (8.3 format, no spaces, no dashes, no symbols, etc, etc).

If you get past that one, then your preferences for the location of the Acad temp directory will prob. pop up. It's default is DRAWING DIRECTORY. Since Acad can't write to a CD.......
