We are looking into getting some type of robotic mechanism or autoloader backup device for our NT Network.

Any suggestions on which kind are more reliable, scaleable, cost-effective, etc?

HP has some good autoloaders and they come in different varieties in order to match your needs. I am not sure how much data that you are backing up or your backup methods. A good place to start looking is at http://www.automatedbackup.com/fs_ntproducts.htm I am using the DLT 418 Autoloader right now and I will be replacing this unit with the tape library 2/20. You can upgrade the library by just attaching more 2/20. This library can be connected in Fibre Channel or SCSI. These drives are also approved for Veritas Backup Exec. But looking through the web site you will see that there are other packages also. I hope this helps.

It really depends on your needs what kind of autoloader you want to purchase.
If you are after speed/tape reliability then go for DLT.
If you are after cheaper products to have large amounts of data stored and do not mind the backup speed then go for DAT.
What drive? Take a look at the HCL on the software suppliers webpage! There is no need to find a good device if it is not supported! But good DLT loaders is HP,Compaq,ADIC actually anything with Quantum inside.
