to get stuck at the logon prompt cozz the pc is unattended most of the time...I've tried the procedure in win2k and it works but I dont know how to do it in winxp...any ideas??

I suggest installing TweakUI for XP which has an auto logon facility as part of the Powertools:

TweakUI can set the proper values in the registry for auto-login and much more. If you just want to edit the registry yourself (or are curious about what registry entries are being changed/updated) then here is a link to an MS article describing the procedure:

If possible I suggest you try take another approach, as an automatic logon isn't really security conscious.

Try to find out if your application can run as a service.

When running as a service noone will need to logon. You may have to set a username for the application to run as, but that you can set in the "services" applet under "administrative tools".

If you can't find any help for your specific programm, check this link:

I also suggest googling for other such products, there are probably many around.

If you still need to logon automatically you could install the Powertoys for windows XP (Tweakui).

This works 100%.

Start with this:--
Type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes).
Select the user profile you want to login.
Uncheck the "User must enter password to login".
Provide the password if required or else leave it.
Press OK.

Couple of ways to logon automatically

by akdaga In reply to This works 100%.

One way of automatically logging into Windows XP is by using "control userpasswords2" as suggested by ch.tuhin and the other way is described by Microsoft in the following article:

Hope this helps,

Does not work 100%

If the GPO enforces a LegalNotice to popup, you will still have to click "ok" to have the system login. So, is there a way to solve this issue?

I got around the GPO message text that was stopping the auto-login by running a shutdown script which deletes the relevant registry values. Here's what I used for my .reg:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Note that this is for the W2K3 GPO setting. There are other settings that display a similar window under this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

You could probably do this in a startup script, but I wanted to be sure it kicked off before the auto-login.
