I’m running an HP laptop with battery removed (long since died), using XP. When power is interrupted, the machine obviously shuts down, and when power is restored, it stays off. Is there a way to make it start up again, instead, like our old towers used to do back in the “good ol’ days”? (Hopefully something software-settable in Power Management, or a jumper to change.)
More background: this machine is being used in a remote location, and this would enable using a mechanical timer or a “dead man switch” to interrupt power from a UPS to force a restart every 24 hours, just in case an application hangs.
Yes, I have a scheduled task that restarts the machine. …can’t guarantee that it will run, though, although probability is high. If the OS locks up, I’m stuck.
