My laptop users connect to Exchange Server5.5/NT4 when on the LAN, but access mail through the POP3 connector when in the field. For this I have set up two profiles. I'd love to be able to have Outlook 2000 select the correct profile according to the MS Windows Hardware Profile in effect (Docked or Undocked). I know that there's an application startup event that can be used to set up a VBA macro in Outlook but I don't have any clue as to how to get the hardwawre profile or use it to choose an Outlook profile. I've been told by consultants that they've seen "something like this" but that's all I've found so far. If anyone has any input -- or if I'm missing something very obvious -- I'd love to hear your views! (Outlook 2000, NT4 SP4 server with EX5.5 SP3, Windows 98 & 2000 client laptops).

That would be really cool, and I would like to know about it if you do find a way...
The only thing I can suggest, is that you create a 2 shortcuts that specify the appropriate (docked/not) profile - just make a shortcut to Outlook and put '/profile "<whateverProfileName>" in the target command bitty. I know that's not an automatic solution, but thought it might be enough - it's worked fine for me.
Ha ha - fair enough! (re your comments (below?)). Perhaps a bit of 'user training' is the answer? Hope someone else can solve this one though - got me curious ;o)
Yep, I'm aware of that idea... but if they can't choose the right profile when they get a dialog box on the screen, why should I think they'd be able to choose the right shortcut from the desktop? :) No, I want the selection done for them. It's a support issue more than anything. Every few days someone tells me they can't get their mail, and consequently the execs think that there's something wrong with the mail system... when in reality I can't find any problems other than maybe these guys get careless. Thanks for the feedback, though.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
Automatic Profile selection in Outlook?
