Automatic windows updates for users.

By trustfundbaby ·
I have a domain with a windows 2000 server PDC and 10 Windows XP workstations. There is a generic "user" group that has the lowest permissions possible (cannot install software etc etc). The problem with this, is that windows updates will not install (they are set to automatically install) unless I am logged on as a Domain administrator.

There has to be an easier way than logging on to every computer to get windows updates installed on each computer? How can I do this?

Also is there a way to enable automatic windows updates for a user group? (Right now I have only one user in the group, and all the users of computers use this one login so I have its profile set up to automatically install updates)

well, i am hunting for the mskb article for you about how to do this. i fixed it on my little network by creating a group of domain users and adding that group to the *local* admin group on each pc. that is cheating but it works. there are article for how to script the windows updates installs during login 'runas' administrator but cant find them for you right now at support.microsoft.com

I wanted a more server centric way of enabling this feature.
Please let me know if you find anything else.
