    Automatically Setup Email Accounts

    Locked

    by carterlangley ·

    Hi all,

I have a small problem. I need to be able to help the members of the organisation I belong to setup their email accounts. Now, I am at the best 2 1/2 hours drive away from them, so I can’t drive there everytime somebody wants to setup an email account and doesn’t know how to do it. Is it possible to have a small program that I can put on my site and then they can download that and push and button and hey presto their email is now working. Obviously it will need to be able to configure the different outlook clients, as well as thunderbird and outlook express.

Would remote access be a viable solution?

If you notice that you’re doing truly repetitive work, then scripting is recommended, but already in your question, you hint at a situation with quite a few variables, so you may want to keep an eye on the process, even if you’ve scripted it.

        Hi TobiF,

Remote access not an option. I am on broadband and they are on dial-up and I tend to run out of patience! Scripting would do it fine. It might just turn out to be repetitive, so yes scripting would save me. What variables are you asking about?

By the way, were you talking about defining accounts on the server or configuring email accounts on a client?

When talking about variables, I had in mind that you referred to several different clients, and then I stirred in some thoughts about different kinds of email accounts, along with users requests for different specials.

However, I don’t know much about servers, so if you’re talking about the server side, then I hope someone else will be able to help.

EditAdd: If we’re talking about setting up clients, then there may be funny ways of shortening the distance. In Outlook Express/Windows Mail, for instance, you could define an account on your own system and export it to an *.iaf file, which you could encrypt and send over to the client.

Yep, not on the server side but on the client side.
Multiple clients to setup on their own machines. I won’t have access to their machines and the majority of them are in no way computer literate, so something they can double click on and it sets it all up for them on their home machine.
