Autosave in Word 97

By andrew.reed ·
Recently my boss spent 3 hours updating a Word doc in Word 97. After opening a second Word doc he clicked on the close application button rather than the close document button. He clicked yes when prompted 'do you want to close all documents without saving?'. After re-opening the 1st doc he realised than none of his changes had been saved and because Word had closed cleanly, ie it didn't crash, the autorecovery document had been deleted.
Does Word 97 have a autosave function, as opposed to the autorecovery option (which appears useless in this situation unless Word crashes) that will save changes with or without prompting?
It seems strange that Excel has this functionality yet Word does not.
Cheers

Word does have an Autosave function. Go to Tools - Options - Set Autosave time and you should be all set - right now you probably have the time interval set to quite high a value...

Sorry but my version of Microsoft Word 97 does not have this option. You may be confused with the autorecovery option in Tools>Options>Save 'Save AutoRecover info every:'. This specifies the period that the auto-recovery document is saved to, however, this does not save the actual document you are editing.

"Microsoft Word (97) does not have built-in functionality that allows you to
automatically perform a full save of the current document at specific intervals."

Type the following into the address box of Internet Explorer.

You might consider a macro. AutoRecover disappoints users, because they imagine it will do more than it does.

Good thinking, I'll explore setting up a timed macro as well as basic PC education for my boss. Thanks
