AVG or Avast

By leedsfan88 ·
I'm just trying to decide which anti virus to install on my new laptop.

I'm thinking of AVG or Avast, both free versions.

Can you suggest which is better and why?

Cheers in advance

Which is better

a Ford or a Chevy?

What do you want, it's already free. Take your pick. If you don't like it, get the other one.

Microsoft Security Essentials

It's free and doesn't chew up system resources like the other 2 do as free versions.

comes down to personal preference

I personally love avast...but AVG does work just as well...there's also Avira, bitdefender and a few others that aren't too shabby either, as said before, try one first, don't like it, try another

I moved from AVG to Avast

when AVG started getting a little greedy.

Told me I had a virus but I could only cure it, if I bought the full version.

It turned out to be a false positive anyway.

Avast only pops up when you need to update to a newer version or to let you know that it has been updated. I scan and check for updates at least weekly with both Spybot and MalwareBytes.

I have been using Avast which is free for home use on my five networked Systems for months now without any problems, no impact on performance either. You only have to register it and then re-register again annually. Set it and forget it. It also has Rootkit detection built in.

This is when I switched over.

Been happy with Avast for years.

Years. Why? Because it just works.

Re: AVG or Avast

I have tried both of them on several computers and the results have always been the same:

Both seem to do their job well, but I find that AVG tends to slow down the computers much more so than avast. Loading times are longer, scan times for files are longer, and I find it tends to cause more gameplay lag.

As a WoW player, latency is an issue of concern for me. I constantly monitor my game latency and can confirm that Avast causes less interference with game latency. Since response time and gameplay are my main concerns I prefer avast.
