Back door key strokes

By geoff_obrien ·
I have set a mandatory profile and group policy for students at my school where they have no menu access to windows explorer and no icons on the desktop. They can only open applications in their edited start menu.I thought this would stop them having access to the local drive through explorer. However, some have found back door key combinations that let them bring up explorer and in some cases double cliccking on the start menu will do the same. Is there some source that lists all the back doorkey strokes in win2000 or a way to stop this happening?

The students could be right clicking on the Start button or using the context menu key or windows key to access explorer. You may need to edit the registry of one PC, back up the newly added keys and DWORDS and add it to the other PC's (they all have to be the same version of Windows for you to do this). WWW.Winguides.com is a great registry site for finding ways to do specific things on client workstations:

Disable the Ability to Right Click on the Desktop (All Versions)
Category: Home > Security > Desktop and Explorer
Download: WinGuides Tweak Manager
This tweak removes the context menu that would normally appear when the user right clicks on the desktop or in the Explorer right results pane.

Open your registry and find the key below.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called 'NoViewContextMenu' using the settings below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Settings:
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Name: NoViewContextMenu
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = disabled,1 = enabled)

You might also look for the edits for disabling the ability to open the control panel or specific applets in the control panel such as display, internet options, etc.

Please contact me via TechRepublic with specific things you want restricted as I have saved directions for many things like this for our classroom PC's.

I have disabled right click in the policy. Is there any way to stop double left click on the start menu from bringing up the folder view in my computer?
