Has anyone ever experienced this and are there any suggestions? It has happened on three 98 machines I have removed virues and botched NewDotNet foistware from and then installed Norton AV 2002. Each machine had different viruses, so I ruled out the virus ‘returning’ and causing the problem. I remove viruses in DOS and verify with two other online scanners.
Ok, I remove viruses, NewDotNet & etc, I apply all MS fixes and patches, upgrade DirectX & etc. Machines work great. Install Norton AV 2002, run the updates, sacn the machine to make sure it does not see anything. I reboot it several times, check programs, return users startup items (after thoroughly checking each and checking the RUN items in the registry), retrn the users settings & etc. I stress test the machine for a day or so and do several reboots. I do scan the regsitry manually to make sure it is a happy camper. All works fine in the shop. Bear in mind these are not networked PCs, but stand alone home PCs.
Within two days it seems, the machine is back to its ‘prior state’, registry items are as they were, Norton is completely hosed and will not run or uninstall, nor will it reinstall. I assume the machine had problems with the registry at some point after it went back to the user and scanreg automatically restored a copy from before I did my work on it. Makes a real freakin mess of things.
I first suspected software such as GoBack, etc – but none of the machnes had any such software installed.
Questions: Is there a way to prevent this from happenning? Does anyone have a clue as to why? Any suggested remedys? I figure I could make a manual backup of the registry and pidgeonhole it away, and if it happens, restore it manually, butthat will not preclude it from happening again. All input greatly appreciated.
