Back up data off a crash hard drive

By jhpjr1 ·
I have a IBM Thinkpad with Window XP PRO and went bad and will have to replace. Is there any procedure I can use to get my data off hard drive before I replace it with a new hard drive?

Send it to a hard disk data recovery company.

While are you waiting to get it back, buy some backup software and burn critical files to DVD or tape.

is it the hd that crashed? are you going to send it out or fix it yourself. who told you the hard disk was bad. what are your symptoms. they make inexpensive enclosures that accept a tiny laptop harddrive and connect via usb to another computer. you can use that to look at the drive and recover what you can.
if i were you i would visit the ibm website and look at what they have to say about getting at the hard drive...

Best bet is to connect hard disk to a desktop (XP or Win2K) as master drive on secondary IDE channel. An adapter will be required which is readily available. Can be purchased at most large computer stores or ordered on web. One source is:

If drive is not recognized by BIOS, all is probably lost.

I do not recommend using a USB enclosure for data recovery.
