Thank you,

This is normal behavior for most backup software packages. Many packages require an add-on to backup open files.

Possible work-arounds:
1. Run the back-up after hours when most files are likely to be closed.
2. If the open files are from something like Exchange, your choice is either shut down Exchange services before conducting the backup, or buying the Exchange-specific add-on for your software package.

If you are using the backup utility built in to Win2K, it has a very limited subset of capabilities available in 3rd-party backup solutions by companies such as CA or Veritas.

Hello,

with MS-SQL-Server I did it this way.

Develop Standard Maintenance-Plan (there is a Assistent). Include Backup to files (maybe to another Server) and backup these Backups to a tape. Maybe you can Include log-backup every 30 Minutes. This has some advantages
- there is a fast source of backups in case a database gets corrupt during the day.
With the logs you can restore the database to a given time.
- If you backup to another Server, you are able to setup another SQL-Server, restore the Databases in case the Server fails.

Veritas is one of the well-known Backup utility program available, which has this feature of backing-up open files.
You can try & get more details on it.
Cheers.
