Background activity in XP

I have a few XP boxes at work, some networked, some standalone. Several times a day the hard drive starts doing something whether anyone is at the computer or not. Can anyone tell me what the computer is trying to do, is it trying to connect to a server some where? It really bogs down the networked computers and slows down the stand alones as well. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
