Hello all. Recently, my vista laptop thought it would be a good idea to update to vista sp1 RC. It didnt update successfully and it advised me to restart. Which I did. I think the bootloader got screwed up or something because it says it is missing an ntoskernel.dll or something.
The only way to fix this easily is to use the recovery DVD which came with the Asus G1S laptop. Sure the OS would start working again but it would wipe my entire hard drive clean! NO! My files are still in there!
So I plugged in the hard disk with the corrupt Vista installation into my desktop. A couple of files were rescuable but some of them were protected by some security setting.
For example, the Documents and Settings folder and My Documents folder were inaccessible. Folder access is denied.
I tried disabling Simple File Sharing then changing the properties of the folder to obtain ownership but I was unable to see the Security tab in the folder properties window. Only General, Sharing and Customize.
I also tried to enable Sharing in the sharing tab and give Full Control but I get a msg saying: “An error occured while trying to share
Help please.
