Backing Up Users & Groups

By TBWolfe ·
What are the steps in backing up users & groups within Windows 2000 Server. Last week we did a mock recovery and upon doing my restore i noticed that my users & groups were not restored. What am i missing? I am using the backup application supplied with Windows 2000 server and backing up onto a tape.

You need to make sure that you are backing up the System State data in your backup job. The System State data contains the following:
- the registry (for local users adn groups)
- the COM+ Class Registration database
- system boot files
If the server is also fucntioning as a domain controller, System State also includes the Active Directory database and the SYSVOL folder.

Just as in answer number 1. You must do a full system state backup. The only difference is when restoring from back-up, you must set the restored data as authoritative (useing ntdsutil)and you must do it twice. The first time will get the users and group but because these users and groups when restored do not always follow a logical order. You will get the groups before all of the users have been restored thus creating some unpopulated groups. That is why you run the restore again from backup to resend the user data thus populating the group membership but to what they were.
