My notebook won't boot. I've tried the repair function but that didn't help. HP suggested I reinstall but I need to know how to backup data from my notebook since I can't get logged on.

well if you have a desktop, you can buy one of those nifty 2.5 to 3.5 HDD adapters that lets you plug in your laptop HDD into your desktop as a secondary drive. CompUSA [shudder] has em. here's a link

When you say you tried the repair function, do you mean you tried to repair the system using the recovery console from the WinXP install disk?

If so, then boot from the install disk again, and this time go through the motions of doing a new OS install. When you get to the part where the installation program examines your hard drive(s), it will detect your copy of XP and then it will ask you if you want it to attempt to repair the OS. Answer yes.

Good luck
