Backup.

By halsadeo ·
I'm about to start on a new windows 2k back up project and I'm looking for tips and advise on how to use the back up feature in windows 2k server and if it is reliable. I'm trying not to use 3rd party software.

Thanks you so much.

I have had a lot of difficulties with NTbackup, but they are primarily associated with trying to run an unattended backup. The software works fine, unless you want an unattended backup. I still have not found a solution to it, but if you will have someone interactively running the backup, it's fine.

Like answer 1 says, the unattended backup can be a pain.

I do use the Win2k server ntbackup and schedule it for unattended backups. Here is how to do it the easy way.

1. Each day do a manual backup on a new tape.
2. Label that tape with the tape ID which is the current date and time of the backup you just did.
3. Write on the tape the day of the week this backup was done on.
4. repeat this each day until you have 5 tapes labeled.

Now you are ready to schedule unattended backups.

Create the backup job and select the tape day and time from the pull down box and make sure that the backup is going to overwrite the tape. Schedule the backup to run once a week on the proper day.

Complete the scheduled backups for each day of the week.

Now you must make sure that the proper days tape is in the drive each day and the unattened backup will work.
